Magruder Volleyball Contributors

Coach Zanni wishes to thank and recognize the individuals listed below for their contributions to his volleyball career and coaching tenure at Magruder.  In their own way each has helped Coach Zanni’s development and/or coaching career at Magruder.

Jack Hunter

Coach Hunter was a legendary volleyball coach in upstate NY during the 1970’s and 1980’s (he is now retired living in New York and Florida ).  He coached varsity boys and girls volleyball at Penfield High School for close to twenty years.  He compiled an overall boys volleyball record of 314 wins and only 26 losses.  During this time he won 15 divisional titles, 12 sectional titles (the equivalent of a regional title in Maryland ) and 2 state titles.  Many of his players went on to play in collegiately and several have gone on to successful coaching careers.  Currently at least three are varsity high school coaches and two are collegiate assistants.

Coach Hunter has been credited by many in the Rochester area with helping popularize the sport of volleyball (boys and girls) during the 70’s and 80’s and is without question, the most successful high school coach in the history of Rochester high school boys volleyball.

In 1998 Coach Hunter was inducted into the Penfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame along with Coach Zanni and Kari Cleveland-Duncan, both former players of Coach Hunter. Coach Hunter was only the 2nd coach in the 45 year history of the school to be inducted.

Nearly all of Coach Zanni’s volleyball experiences can be traced back to Coach Hunter. Coach Hunter created a successful program that numerous kids wished to be a part of.  He took his kids and provided an opportunity to learn to play the game at a very competitive high school level and demanded excellence from his players.  He instilled the desire to compete and succeed in his players.  Many of the lessons he learned at Penfield have been applied to his coaching at Magruder High School .

Shang Hsiung

Shang is the Men’s Volleyball Coach at the University or Maryland and runs the Maryland Volleyball Program, a boys volleyball club in the region.  He has coached both for close to 20 years.  Recognized nationally as one of the best volleyball coaches in the country, he has received numerous awards for his service and coaching abilities.

Shang is one of a select few who is employed by USA Volleyball to train high school, club and collegiate coaches.  His boys volleyball club teams have finished as high as 6th at the National Championships and has also turned out several USA Volleyball All-Americans.  His college teams have been among the best in the country.  He is one of the most respected coaches in the DC area.

Coach Zanni played for Shang at Maryland from 1988-1992.  Shang taught Coach Zanni how to prepare to play a team.  This includes how to scout the strength and weaknesses of a team and how to prepare a game plan for opponents.  Much of Coach Zanni’s philosophies and beliefs about volleyball and how to coach it come from Shang, who continues to serve as a mentor for Coach Zanni.

Wanda Hsiung

Wanda Hsiung is the longest serving coach in Montgomery County , having worked at Kennedy High School for the past twenty years as the girls, boys and coed volleyball coach.  During this time her team has appeared in several county championships.  She also has been named Montgomery County Coach of the Year multiple times and is widely respected by her peers as among the best coaches in the high school ranks.  Wanda also is a coach in the Maryland Volleyball Program with her husband Shang.

Early in Coach Zanni’s career (as a coach), Wanda served as a mentor.  She helped Scott make the transition from college player to high school coach and often provided sound advice.

Wanda is married to Shang and their daughter, Amanda, is was all-county setter for Blair High School (now playing at Vassar), making the Hsiung family the first family of volleyball in Montgomery County .
